Though a decrease in performance can affect any operating system, the problem most often occurs on laptops running Microsoft Windows. A computer that runs slower than its new equivalent can be caused by a number of problems, most of which can be repaired by the average computer user.
Viruses
Viruses come in many varieties, and while some are benign, others consume a large percentage of the system's CPU, which causes the computer to run poorly.
Spyware
Similar to viruses, spyware is hidden spying software on a computer that hogs system resources without the user's permission or knowledge.
Capacity
Once the available space on the hard drive is low, the performance and speed of the machine will be affected, particularly on laptops with low RAM.
Ventilation
A vent that is blocked because of debris or improper placement on a flat surface will cause the laptop to overheat. As the laptop's temperature increases, its ability to function at normal speeds is reduced.
Malfunction
A faulty part, whether it's the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, fan or other essential piece of hardware, can lead to slow speeds as the system tries to bypass the problem.
