  • If you or a loved one has been struggling with symptoms of depression, you need to learn the causes of this condition. Some causes can be internal, while others may stem from outside factors.

    Psychological

Depression can be caused by medical problems, low self-esteem, or a drastic change in life. How you react to life events and how you regard yourself may predispose you to episodes of depression. (Ref. 1.)

    Genetic

Major depression can be genetic. Depression may also occur as a result of behavioral traits common to family members, if these behaviors are passed from generation to generation. (Ref. 1.)

    Environmental

Traumatic life events can trigger an episode of mental depression. These can include loss of a family member or friend, a relationship breakup, job loss or financial problems. (Ref. 1.)

    Physical

Contracting illnesses like Parkinson's disease or cancer, suffering a stroke or heart attack, developing hormonal illness can make you feel apathetic. Depression is linked to changes in brain function or brain structure. (See Ref. 1)

    Combination of Factors

Some people are predisposed to depression. For them, a life-changing event can trigger an episode of depression. (Ref. 1.)
