Since the early days of motoring, radios in cars have increased the enjoyment of time spent driving. As audio quality has progressed over the years, the need for better sound systems has grown as well. The device that makes powerful and rich-sounding audio possible in modern vehicles is the electronic amplifier.
Purpose
Car audio amplifiers are designed to boost a low-powered sound signal and convert it into one at a higher level. Most car audio sources such as radios do not output enough signal to power large speakers. Amplifiers solve this problem.
Signal
Car amplifiers rely on a signal from an audio source in order to control the speakers. This low-power signal contains the actual music or sound to be amplified, and can be connected to a variety of sound sources.
Channels
Car amplifiers are available with different numbers of channels. Each channel controls a separate set of speakers. A sub woofer may connect to one channel, while left and right speakers connect to two others.
Power
Power that is higher than the signal level is needed for an amplifier to function. This power often comes directly from the car battery, and enables large speakers to operate at high volume.
Quality
Different quality levels are available for car amplifiers, each with different price levels. High-quality amplifiers offer more channels and better electronic efficiency for better audio with less distortion.
