  • An integral part of the motorcycle, the fairing serves to protect the rider from wind and fatigue. It is available in a wide number of configurations dependent upon the type of motorcycle and the preference of the rider.

    Function

Fairings may serve a variety of functions, but their main purpose remains to shield the rider from wind, rain and debris. The addition of a fairing can take what could have been an exhaustive ride and turn it into a pleasurable trip. By providing a wind break, the fairing allows the rider to simply sit upon the bike, instead of having to continually brace himself from the force of wind. Other secondary purposes may include storage, instrumentation mounting, sun screening and aesthetics.

    Types

Fairings come in three basic styles. The full fairing is found in widespread use among touring motorcyclists. It has full coverage of the torso, face and hands, providing the most protection of any of the fairing types. The second is the cafe racer style. This type is favored among sport bike enthusiasts and generally provides the least amount of protection. The rider must lean over the gas tank, riding low on the motorcycle to obtain any benefit. The final style is the windshield-only model. Made from a modern form of plastic known as polycarbonate polymer, these windshields are lightweight and scratch resistant. They are favored among cruising motorcycles.

    Mount Types

The mounting of the fairing comes in two types, with each type having a following of loyal riders. Fork-mounted fairings actually turn as the rider turns the handlebars. This has the added benefit of allowing the rider to direct the headlight as needed. Frame mounted fairings are rigidly attached to the bike and do not move. Some riders prefer the stability of this type of fairing.

    Risks

Fairings generally provide the motorcyclist with a safer, more pleasurable riding experience. There are two general areas, however, in which to be cautious. The first is rider visibility. If the fairing is improperly selected, it may impair rider vision. Worse, it may actually direct wind into the face of the rider. Second, it can and does add to the wind resistance of the motorcycle. In heavy cross winds or high speed riding, riders must be cautious of this force and its effect on handling.

    Cost Considerations

Fairings are available in a wide range of pricing, selling anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Many come as an integral part of the motorcycle and are included in the initial sale. Others can be purchased from aftermarket motorcycle companies and can be mounted in more custom applications.
