  • Many digital cameras and video cameras now are equipped with SD memory cards as their main source of memory space. SD cards are compact and easy to work with, however if your pictures are not saving as intended or your files are giving your "Corrupt" responses when you try to open them, it may be time to format your SD card. Formatting the SD card wipes the memory clean and digitally sets up the card to accept files.

    Using a Computer

You can format the SD card using a card reader and a computer. Simply plug the card reader into the computer USB port and then slide the SD card into the appropriate card slot on the reader. Wait for the hardware to be recognized by your computer and the opening window to pop up on your screen. When the window opens, click "File" then "Format Disk." Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the formatting process.

    In the Camera

You are also able to format an SD card in the camera. Turn the camera on then select "Settings." Scroll to "Format Memory Card" and select this option. Select "Yes" when asked if you really want to format the card, then wait as the camera wipes the SD card clean and reformats it.
