Definition
One definition of the word compact is "occupying little space compared with others of its type." This is applicable to compact cars, which are smaller than regular cars.
Size
The Environmental Protection Agency defines a compact car as one that has a total interior cabin space of between 100 and 109.9 cubic feet.
Length
Another measurement to define a compact car is its length. For a hatchback, the length is 161 to 175 inches. For a compact sedan, the length is a bit longer, with 173 to 181 inches being the range.
Origin
The first compact car was created in 1950. It was called the Nash Rambler, and it was so popular that soon other companies began making compact cars.
Sub-Compact
The only vehicle class smaller than a compact car is a sub-compact car. This vehicle class was invented in the 1970s.
