Opinions & actions are miles apart

As you say, in modern (western?) society everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they are definitely NOT entitled to 'do' whatever they want; that's where 'right & wrong' comes in.

Some people's opinions may be correct or incorrect, but 'right/wrong' often describes something closer to 'morality' than 'validity/truth'. So because thoughts and opinions are kinda metaphysical, you can't place them in a moral category until they translate into physical actions.

People without firm beliefs looove to argue that everyone is entitled to their opinions, so as to point to that disclaimer whenever anyone disagrees with them. I find it to be a wishy-washy cop-out by those who, while claiming to be unique individuals, are actually the same sheeple that they think they're condemning.

Indeed, asserting that we're all entitled to our opinions never needs to be said; it's a waste of breath. No one in a civilized society claims that thought should be enforced.

With that being said, it should be noted that just because we have differing opinions doesn't mean that morality itself should sacrificed. A person can have all the horrible, violent, and twisted opinions that they want, but acting upon them is wrong and will be condoned by no one. By the same token, a minority of the people may have all the benevolent, helpful opinions that they wish, but if the majority sees otherwise, nothing will come of the minority's beliefs. It's all about what the majority defines as right at a specific time. And changing the majority's mind is a complicated task, but that's another story altogether.

everyone is entitled to thier opinion..however that is not the same thing as meaning everyone has the right to act on those opinions or force others to adhere to them...that is where Right and Wrong comes in...your opinion is yours to have..but that doesn't mean society will accept it as a correct opinion to have...

There is no universal 'right' and there is no universal'wrong'. There is, however indvidual 'right' and indvidual 'wrong'.

There are just alot of different opnions.

There's personal opinion and opinion based on knowledge of the facts. Both cases present opportunity for right and wrong.

There has to be options to enable someone to form an opinion. That's where right or wrong fits in as options for society.

Many opinions wildly conflict with each other, so to me it seems that there are right and wrong opinions.

There is always a place for right or wrong. Without things being wrong, we can not learn from our mistakes and make things better!

It seems to me that right and wrong have been relegated to the conservative religious right. They seem to be the only ones willing to even take a stand either way on right and wrong. Every where else it's relative.

Look at Answerbag. People mistake opinion for right and wrong all the time.

There can be more informed opinions and ignorant opinions. In that sense, one opinion is more "right" than the other. I think in society, that which does the most people the most good is more right than that which does harm.

As long as we have or want to have a society, there will be places for both opinions (which will and should vary) and absolutes or laws (such as 'right & wrong').

From an individual's point of view, the opinion is a personal and private thing that may be expressed openly or kept secret.

From the entire society's point of view, RIGHT & WRONG, and all of the allowances and restrictions that go with them, must be there and must be clearly stated for all to know, so that each and every member of the society can and will understand how the rest of society will treat any given action.

Opinions deal with thought while 'right & wrong' deals with actions ... we all think something and we all do something ... although we may think what we want, we must do as our society accepts.

A very definite place. There often is many right answers to a question. Opinions often are un related, i.e. what's your favorite flavor of ice cream. There is no right/wrong answer.
