    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

The first fully automatic transmission was invented in 1939 with the launch of GM's Hydra-Matic. It was first available in 1940 model Oldsmobiles. Automatic cars quickly became popular; since the 1950s, the majority of vehicles sold in America have had automatic transmissions.
