Computer files can range in type and size from tiny text files taking only a kilobyte to massive multimedia videos that start at several gigabytes. Different media are available for storing these items, including compact discs (CDs).
Answer
To burn a CD means to write files to a CD-R and then to close it so that the files can neither be erased nor rewritten. Burning can also refer to a DVD.
Error
The term "burning" is sometimes erroneously used to mean copying files to a rewritable disk like a CD-RW. The more technical designation in that case is "writing to a CD."
Windows 7
This ability is built into some operating systems such as Windows 7 and Vista. You access it through the Windows Explorer file utility.
Others
For other operating systems such as Windows XP or earlier, you need to buy a separate utility like Roxio Creator to burn disks (see Resources).
Uses
Though burning stores data files for the long term, it is more often used to keep music files so that the CD can then be played in players that are portable, used in a car or part of a home stereo system.
