Elavil, also known as amitriptylene, is used to treat the symptoms of depression. The drug helps balance the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain. Elavil should be taken only as instructed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of elavil, take the medication as soon as possible. Store elavil at room temperature. Elavil may cause blurred vision or abdominal pain. Cold sweats, high blood pressure or confusion may also be caused by taking elavil. Possible effects of elavil overdose are muscle weakness, weak pulse and low body temperature. Call your doctor immediately if you suffer these side effects. Patients with bipolar disorder or risk of heart attack should be cautious about using elavil. Tell your doctor if you have these conditions or if you have diabetes, glaucoma or a history of seizures. Do not stop taking elavil without consulting your doctor. He may want you to slowly reduce your dose to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as nausea or headache.Dose and Storage
