Lutera is a hormonal birth control pill taken daily. Lutera is the generic name of a pill that is sold under multiple brand names, including Alesse, Levora and Trivora-28. It is available by prescription.
Ingredients
The active ingredients in Lutera are ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, which are female hormones that prevent ovulation, and therefore pregnancy.
Other Uses
Birth control pills such as Lutera can have other uses, such as relieving menstrual cramps or regulating a menstrual cycle. Check with your doctor before engaging in off-label uses of any drug.
Emergency Contraception
According to Princeton University, Lutera can be taken in a pinch as emergency contraception. Take five white pills within 120 hours after unprotected sex and five more white pills 12 hours later.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of Lutera include acne, nausea, spotting between periods, breast tenderness and headaches.
Warnings
You shouldn't take Lutera if you are pregnant or if you recently had a child. Taking Lutera can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack. Many other side effects and warnings can be obtained from your doctor.
