Acid reflux, a condition in which stomach acids travel back up into the esophagus, affects many people. Small dietary changes can alleviate acid reflux to a great degree.
Harmful Foods
The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle at the top of the stomach and bottom of the esophagus. It should be closed except when you're eating, but some food lowers the pressure on the muscle, which allows fluid to come back up into the esophagus.
Meat
Buffalo wings, chicken nuggets, ground beef and marbled steak should be avoided.
Grains
Pasta with any kind of a rich sauce and macaroni and cheese can cause acid reflux.
Fruits and Vegetables
Onions, mashed potatoes, any citrus fruits or juices, cranberry juice and tomatoes are aggravating foods to the system.
Fats, Sweets and Beverages
Oily salad dressings, fried food, chocolate, doughnuts, brownies, chips, alcohol, coffee, tea and soda can cause problems for someone with acid reflux.
Dairy
Cottage cheese, sour cream, and ice cream should be avoided.
