A Honda VTEC is a revolutionary engine that was launched by Honda in April 1989. VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control.
Function
VTEC engines use variable valve timing and variable lift to reach a high level of performance and fuel economy. VTEC engines operate using its four valves depending on the level of revolutions per minute.
Significance
Until VTEC engines appeared, it was thought that it was necessary to sacrifice power for fuel economy. Honda proved this was not the case, and according to ImporTuner.com, many top drivers used VTEC engines to enter the record books.
History
Honda set out to create the VTEC engine in January 1983. Two teams of engineers tinkered with technology on different models of Honda cars and motorcycles until the initial VTEC engine was released in April 1989.
Considerations
Honda initially only incorporated VTEC engines into its performance cars. Over time, Honda realized that VTEC engines perform well in all types of conditions and now put VTEC engines in 80 percent of its cars as opposed to 5 percent in 1991.
Benefits
VTEC engines provide a superior amount of performance and fuel economy. They save money by reducing trips to the gas pump while reducing emissions.
