  • Tachycardia is an abnormally fast heartbeat, generally more than 100 beats per minute in an adult. There are several types of tachycardia, which usually require medical technology to differentiate. Tachycardia can be caused by substances or diseases.

    Genetic Causes

The Mayo Clinic states that some types of tachycardia are caused by congenital defects such as abnormal electrical pathways in the heart that are present at birth. The National Institutes of Health states that tachycardia can also be caused by a problem with blood returning to the heart.

    Lifestyle Causes

High blood pressure, smoking and dehydration can all contribute to a faster-than-normal heartbeat. Exercise causes the heart to beat faster but usually returns to normal soon afterward.

    Substance Causes

Tachycardia can be caused by smoking, heavy alcohol or caffeine consumption, a reaction to medications, and recreational drugs or amphetamines.

    Treatment

Other than discontinuing lifestyle choices that lead to tachycardia, the Mayo Clinic suggests medication or vagal maneuvers to slow heartbeat. In extreme cases, shock treatment may be necessary.

    Warning

The Mayo Clinic warns that some people with tachycardia may develop life-threatening blood clots. Drugs can be prescribed to lower the risk.
