  • A computer has several parts, terms, and functions that novice and experienced users may not even understand. When operating a basic computer, one of the key elements is a desktop. The desktop serves many functions and may look different depending on what type of computer you use.

    Function

The desktop offers quick access to programs, folders and media files by actually having the items right on the screen or by placing a shortcut icon there.

    Identification

The desktop is what appears on the screen when nothing is loaded. It features a background and icons. For Mac computers, a small bar of icons is featured on the bottom while Windows icons are usually organized to the right.

    Wallpaper

All desktops have the ability to display a background image known as "wallpaper." Wallpaper can be something as simple as a solid color or something more advanced like a flash animated wallpaper with clickable options.

    Recycling Bin

Almost every desktop features a recycling or trash bin for computer files and folders. When something is deleted, it automatically goes here. The bin icon will appear full if it contains anything and appear empty when the bin has been emptied.

    Widgets

Newer operating systems feature "widgets," which are small desktop applications that can be anything from a clock to a small game, or even a quick search engine for Internet browsing.
