Some drugs can cause blood pressure to go up. If blood pressure is high to begin with, this can be a dangerous condition. Be aware of the hypertensive effects of some common medications.
NSAIDs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen can cause an increase in blood pressure. They cause the body to retain fluid and lower kidney function, both of which can lead to high blood pressure.
Cough and Cold Medicine
Many cough and cold remedies contain NSAIDs, which can raise blood pressure. They often contain decongestants, which can affect blood pressure and decrease the effectiveness of some blood pressure medications.
Migraine Medications
Migraine medications often work by restricting blood flow to blood vessels in the head. Constricting the blood vessels causes the blood to pump harder, raising blood pressure.
Diet Aids
Many diet aids cause the heart to beat faster. The increase in heartbeat causes more pressure on the blood vessels, which raises blood pressure, sometimes to life-threatening levels.
Birth Control Pills
The Mayo Clinic states that birth control pills can affect blood pressure. The risk of high blood pressure increases with duration and age.
