A modern computer with a quad core processor is normally a fast machine, but there are things that can adversely affect the speed of a computer, even if it has a quad core processor.
Function
The quad core processor in a computer operates by splitting computations up between four physically separate processing chips which all reside on a single silicon wafer. This increases the speed at which computations can be performed.
Types
Quad core computers can come in both desktop and laptop versions. Desktop quad core computers tend to have more RAM than their laptop counterparts that will make them run faster.
Viruses Can Cause Slowdowns
If your quad core computer take an abnormally long time to boot up, programs are running slowly or the whole system seems sluggish, you may have a virus or other piece of malicious software that is sapping your computer's speed. Run a virus scan to remove any unwanted software.
Misconceptions
While quad core processors do provide a great speed boost, the processor is just one part of a fast computer. RAM, graphics cards and hard drives all have various sizes and speeds that can affect how fast a computer runs.
Prevention/Solution
A quad core computer should have at least 2GB of RAM (preferably more) to run speedily. You should also remove unused programs from your computer, as they can bog the computer down.
