Computerese is often a series of letters that at first appear meaningless. Even experienced users can sometimes be confused when there are minor technology changes that generate a whole new set of abbreviations.
Bits and Bytes
Computer memory comes in multiple sizes. A bit is similar to a brain cell. A byte is eight bits. A kilobyte (kb) is 1,024 bytes. A megabyte (mb) is 1,024 kilobytes and a gigabyte (gb) 1,024 mb. Three gb is 3,072 mb or just a few more cells than are in approximately 3,000 average human brains.
What Is ddr?
Double-Data-Rate, or ddr, is a type of memory chip that was designed to work on computers as they became faster. The chips transfer double the amount of data as older chips in the same amount of time.
Computer Memory
When talking about computer memory confusion is common. The acronym RAM, random access memory, and memory are the same in everyday usage and refer to the chips that programs are loaded into when you start your computer.
Where Is Your Memory?
That 3 gb ddr memory is located inside your computer on several small, removable boards. This is to make it easier to increase the memory as chips are improved.
What It Does
Three gb of memory lets you run multiple programs, even ones with graphics and motion, without slowing everything down.
