Multiple sclerosis is a serious disease that degrades a person's health over time. Dr. Roy Swank has come up with a diet that for 60 years has helped MS patients live better lives.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system, causing the myelin that covers the axons of nerve cells to degenerate and lead to damage. Dr. Swank believes that diet, in particular saturated fats, and an inactive lifestyle can lead to MS.
The MS Diet
Dr. Swank developed a diet specifically to help MS patients. It consists of a low intake of red and other fatty meats, saturated fats and polyunsaturated oils. His plan includes getting adequate rest, reducing stress and maintaining an optimistic attitude.
Limit Your Fats
The diet requires patients to refrain from red meat for the first year and eat only 3 oz. per week after that. Dieters are allowed only 15g of saturated fat and 20g to 50g of unsaturated fat per day.
Watch Your Dairy
Swank says to limit your dairy to two servings a day of low- (1g saturated fat) or non-fat products, and to avoid butter, margarine, shortening, lard and imitation dairy products.
Food for Thought
The diet recommends two servings of fruits and vegetables and a heavy intake of whole grains like pasta, rice and low-fat cereals. Fish, shellfish and white-meat poultry are all permissible, as are nuts and seeds, since they contain natural oils and essential fatty acids.
