Spreadsheets, and the programs that create them, can arguably be pointed to as a reason that personal computers have become as popular as they are. These programs may be boring for many people, but they offer a great deal of benefits.
Definition
A computer spreadsheet is a program that displays data in rows and columns on a screen.
Space
Spreadsheets do not take up a great deal of physical space on your computer. Unlike their physical counterparts, years of computer spreadsheets can be stored in a relatively small box, or left on a dedicated computer.
Computation
Computerized spreadsheets have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers automatically in columns and rows. This can dramatically cut down on human error.
Design
A spreadsheet program can make data easy to read through its design. Using background colors, displaying text in different colors (red for debits, black for credits) and arranging data in tables allows a spreadsheet program to present data in an easy-to-understand way.
Charts and Graphs
A computer spreadsheet can easily create a chart or a graph from data that is put into its columns and rows. This feature is one of the most popular options of modern spreadsheet programs.
