Kleptomania is the uncontrollable act of stealing. The cause of the disorder is debatable, but research suggests that a number of factors could be involved. Kleptomania is a type of impulse-control disorder in which a person feels an inexplicable desire to steal, despite being aware of the consequences. Kleptomaniacs don't steal for personal gain or out of revenge or hate, but because of the urge for the act itself. Kleptomania occurs as a cycle in which the first stage is the urge to steal, which makes you feel anxious, tense or aroused. The next is the act of stealing, which brings feelings of relief and gratification. The final stage brings guilt, self-loathing and remorse, but the urge returns and the cycle starts anew. Some evidence links kleptomania to a deficiency with the brain's production of serotonin. Other research suggests it is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder or other addictive disorders. Other factors that could lead to the development of kleptomania include head trauma, brain injury or stress. Kleptomania might also be hereditary. The disorder typically starts during adolescence or in a person's 20s. Studies suggest that fewer than 5 percent of shoplifters suffer from kleptomania.Definition
