RAM is short for "Random Access Memory," a type of computer memory that can be used by your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the CPU (Central Processing Unit).
Benefits
The more RAM your computer has, the faster applications will load. This is more noticeable on 3D applications such as video games.
Types
Types of RAM include SDR, DDR, DDR2 and DDR3. RAM technology increases in size and speed fairly often, so RAM types usually become obsolete quickly.
Swapping
If you need more RAM than what you have available on you computer, your computer can "swap," meaning that your computer will temporarily use your hard drive space in place of the RAM.
Differences
All computers have a small amount of ROM. Do not confuse RAM with ROM. RAM is a "readable and writable" type of memory, while ROM can only be read.
SRAM and DRAM
SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) and DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) are both used to hold memory. SRAM is the faster type of RAM. DRAM must be refreshed constantly, while SRAM does not need to be refreshed at all.
