The leap from dial-up Internet to high-speed broadband connections has caused many changes in surfing and general online activities, from staying connected to broadening our experiences.
Always-On Connections
With dial-up, one had to manually connect to the Internet whenever they wanted to check their email or navigate to a website. With broadband, one needs only to open an Internet application to access these services.
Multimedia
Dial-up is a relatively slow connection, measured in a few kilobytes per second. Now that we can download in megabytes per second, we can view large videos and listen to high-quality music over the Internet.
Time Investment
Since dial-up works over a phone line, you must disconnect if you want to receive calls or faxes on that line. Broadband uses different connections so you can use the Internet as long as you want without missing calls or faxes.
Piracy
Unfortunately for content creators, having a very fast connection makes it easier to download movies and albums, and many websites have been built around offering this content illegitimately.
Online Gaming
Broadband allows a much easier way to play games over the Internet. More data can be moved back and forth, and there is much less delay between moving a mouse and seeing movement on your screen in an online game.
