  • Your blood pressure is made up of two separate numbers: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Combined, they help to indicate the level of pressure placed on your blood vessels by the movement of your blood. With a high diastolic blood pressure, your arteries are sustaining an elevated level of force between the actual beats of your heart.

    Identification

For you to have high diastolic blood pressure, the bottom number of your blood pressure reading is 90 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) or above. Your aim should be anywhere under 80 mmHg.

    Significance

Any elevation in blood pressure can lead to damage to the arterial walls, causing them to harden, weaken and even narrow.

    Effects

When hardening and narrowing take place, you're at a greater risk of heart disease, heart failure, heart attack and stroke. If an artery weakens, it can eventually lead to a rupture (or aneurysm) that is often life-threatening.

    Function

High diastolic blood pressure is often a result of different factors, including your age, diet, weight, lifestyle and stress.

    Prevention/Solution

To prevent and/or reduce an increase in your diastolic blood pressure, limit your intake of sodium, cholesterol and saturated fats while increasing your intake of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Couple this with a healthy weight and daily exercise to further reduce the chances of high diastolic blood pressure.
