  • For years, researchers have studied the effect of coffee and other caffeinated drinks on blood pressure, with no definitive answers. The relationship between high blood pressure and caffeine isn't conclusive, but there is correlation.

    Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension is a serious health risk that could lead to greater problems, including coronary artery disease, aneurysm, heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure.

    Caffeine's Effect

According to Sheldon Sheps, M.D., 2 to 3 cups of coffee per day can raise your systolic pressure 3 to 14 millimeters of mercury and raise your diastolic pressure 4 to 13 millimeters of mercury. Sheps says that to avoid health problems, your systolic pressure should be less than 140 mm Hg, and your diastolic pressure should be no less than 70 mm Hg.

    Another Cup?

Research suggests that caffeine may cause stimulation to the adrenal gland, releasing cortisol and adrenaline, which could lead to an increase in blood pressure. Caffeine may also block the effects of adenosine, which keeps the body's blood vessels widened for proper blood flow.

    Effects May Vary

People who don't consume caffeine regularly may experience temporary, but sharp spikes to their blood pressure. Research suggests that people who are regular caffeine consumers have a higher average blood pressure. Other research claims that people can build a tolerance to caffeine, thus avoiding a long-term effect on their blood pressure.

    Check Yourself

Professionals say that you can learn if you are sensitive to caffeine by checking your blood pressure 30 minutes within drinking a caffeinated beverage. If you notice a spike of 5 to 10 points, then you might be sensitive. Researchers advise that you limit your daily caffeine intake to 200 milligrams, or two cups of coffee.
