Size
The huge size of a rhinoceros makes it dangerous if it should approach someone. The white rhino weighs as much as 5,000 lbs, making it impossible for a human to withstand an attack by it.

African rhinos possess a horn on their nose capable of goring an individual at close range.
Speed
The black rhino can attain speeds of up to 40 miles an hour, according to the San Diego Zoo. At that pace, it would quickly overtake a person on foot and have the ability to trample him.

The rhino has terrible eyesight, a fact that makes it possible to frighten the animal, causing it to charge.
Potential
Someone who stumbles upon a mother rhino and her calf in the wild is subject to a potential attack, as the mother will vigorously defend her young one.
Numbers
Human deaths from dealings with a rhinoceros are not uncommon occurrences. Thirty-four people were killed by rhinos between 2004 and 2009 in the Chitwan area of Nepal, including a 17-year-old girl killed by one in August 2009.
