Is it Illegal for a officer to record a statement made by a suspect, if the suspect does not know the recording is being made?

    Normally they would inform you before taking your statement. They can still do it without informing you, but a good lawyer can have the judge dismiss it from being entered as evidence.

    I believe that when you're speaking to an officer, there's an implication that anything you say is a matter of police record.

    No, it's not. Be polite when you are stopped for a traffic violation your conversation is being recorded. It's for YOUR protection as well as the officers.

    Look at your state laws. Some states require that both parties to a conversation know that the recording is being done. Here in Ohio, only one party has to be aware.
    As far as law enforcement, if you made a statement, there is nothing in Ohio law that says that the officer has an obligation to inform you that the statement is being recorded.

    Its legal why do you think they have wire taps. If they don't have a warrant or your permission its not Admissible in court.

    No. If you where talking to say a friend though and they in turn where recording you for the police without a warrant, then that is illegal.
