What were the strengths of the south (1861)

    From what I remember, they were rural, and therefore experienced hunters, and were probably better riflemen. There is also no doubt that the southern generals were much better military strategists.

    They had more seaports, including the largest in the country at the time (Charleston I believe), though the north had stronger navy.

    They also had "home field advantage", as the north was invading the south. They fought on territory they were familiar with.
