I believe the Russian Mig at that time was a jet powered aircraft and the US was indeed close behind them but could not keep up with the MIG at that time

Yes, the British had the Gloster meteor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_Meteor The American Bell P 59 did enter service but not as a combat aircraft & the Lockheed P80 did not fly until early in 1944 and it never saw combat either. The mig 9 and the Yak 15 did not fly until after the war. The Japanese Nakajima J9Y. Only flew once before the war ended. Here's a list of "first generation" jet fighters for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_generation_jet_fighter No allied rocket aircraft were used operationally in World War 2 - although a few were tested.

The allied Powers used only two jet aircraft operationally in WW2. The RAF used the Gloster Meteor. The USAF deployed several squadrons of Lockheed P-80's to Italy before the end of the war, but they never saw combat. The USAF was also using the Bell P-59 as a jet trainer during WW2. +5
