The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is a classic in it's own rights, being one of the first truly horrifying movies of our time.

That film has the best last 10 minutes of any film ever committed to celluloid. No Hollywood cop-out there.

Some of the old ones: Original Texas Chainsaw, The Exorcist, The Shining, Halloween. It's not easy to make a truly scary movie just like it isn't easy to make a truly funny movie.

The Japanese also make some truly scary films. I think it's their forte.
Avatar killdrphil Nov, 07 2009 at 02:45 PM
They do. They've got the whole thing down pretty good. And, I think Asian people are naturally a little kooky - not in a bad way - so that helps them.

I have never seen a Japanese scary movie.
.
The Tingler was directed by a great of his time... William Castle. He fell into the "B" movie genre a lot but some of his stuff was really creepy. Of course, the Tingler was from 1959 and I was a wee lad when I saw it but it scared the snot out of me.

- Wolf Creek, creeped the shit out of me, very disturbing movie.
- The Last House on the Left, highly disturbing too
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (though I thought it actually was also quite funny)
- Audition (Japanese movie by Takashi Miike). Starts very slow, ends really creepy.

Just to name a few. There are quite a lot of Asian horror movies that are really scary.

Isn't Wolf Creek just 2 hrs of women getting raped? I remember reading a review of that years ago. Last House is also women getting raped, I've seen that one actually. Yeah, Audition is a personal favorite of mine, I love Asian horror. Any other asian recommendations?
Avatar BloedEnMelk Nov, 07 2009 at 02:01 AM
Wolf Creek is about a psychopath, but it's not 2 hours of women getting raped. It starts very slow, and though it is a very disgusting movie, I don't remember a rape scene. I might be very wrong in that memory though, but it sure isn't two hours of rape.
The horror in this movie is the cruelty and the reality of it.
the Last House on the Left is 90 minutes of torment, and yes there is rape in that movie.
Both are very hard to watch!
Audition is great! Other Asian horror.. aside from mentioning the well-known Ring, Dark Water and the Grudge (the originals of course!), I really liked 'Shutter' (Thai one, good plot, some good scares), 'a Tale of Two Sisters', not a lot of scares but very good plot, great movie! 'The Eye', I think there is an American remake but of course you should watch the original. 'Kairo' is great, 'Noroi the Curse', great documentary style.

It depends on if you are able to suspend disbelief when watching them, to allow yourself to be drawn into the movie... in other words to take it seriously. Horror movies don't tend to be scary when you are watching them with a group of friends, commenting throughout the whole thing.

Horror movies, other than cheap scare tactics and abundant gore, are great for the imagination, as often, your perception of its mood and concept are what shall spawn the fear. By using a realistic setting and throwing it into something outrageous, you can make your own links.

How else would something as trite as the horror movie have managed to survive for years? It's a good formula. What creeps someone out may make another laugh.

With that said, I don't know. Go into seventies B horror movies, some of these are very creepy, or perhaps you'd prefer psychological horror, or again, horror thrillers-those are the ones that scare me the most, like Silence of the Lambs, because it's slightly plausible, within reason.
Or maybe things like The Exorcist, The Omen are The Amityville series are more up your alley.

Anyways to answer the question, Halloween II.

I viewed "Halloween" (with Jamie Lee Curtis on Halloween the other day) and it was ahead of its time; except for the loud/obnoxious music in the background. Perhaps I will give part "II" a viewing. The anguished psychiatrist is worth admission, alone. :)
Avatar Chainsaw Nov, 03 2009 at 10:37 PM
Part II is a lot more violent and angry, but I was 12 when I first saw this, so maybe that's why it scared me.
But yeah, the original is pretty much what defined the slasher genre after psycho, despite Friday the thirteenth taking all the credit.

I made the mistake of seeing Last House On The Left. The original one from the 70s. Disgusting. and true horror. Wish I never saw it.
