The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is a classic in it's own rights, being one of the first truly horrifying movies of our time.

Some of the old ones: Original Texas Chainsaw, The Exorcist, The Shining, Halloween. It's not easy to make a truly scary movie just like it isn't easy to make a truly funny movie.

    Bloed... on stand-by

    - Wolf Creek, creeped the shit out of me, very disturbing movie.
    - The Last House on the Left, highly disturbing too
    - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (though I thought it actually was also quite funny)
    - Audition (Japanese movie by Takashi Miike). Starts very slow, ends really creepy.

Just to name a few. There are quite a lot of Asian horror movies that are really scary.

I made the mistake of seeing Last House On The Left. The original one from the 70s. Disgusting. and true horror. Wish I never saw it.

the ring, exorcism of emily rose, drag me to hell. but here's what i do. i wait until a movie is out for 4-5 weeks already. basically about to leave theaters. then i pick a tuesday or wednesday morning to go to a theatre away from the city centre. i almost always have a big black creepy theatre to myself. at most, there's one other person there and he's there for the same reason. there is NO better way to watch a horror film.

second best way, get some kick ass headphone (i prefer the buds), a nice big hdtv turn out all the lights and have at it. movies that would otherwise be stupid are AWESOME in this venue.

It depends on if you are able to suspend disbelief when watching them, to allow yourself to be drawn into the movie... in other words to take it seriously. Horror movies don't tend to be scary when you are watching them with a group of friends, commenting throughout the whole thing.

Horror movies, other than cheap scare tactics and abundant gore, are great for the imagination, as often, your perception of its mood and concept are what shall spawn the fear. By using a realistic setting and throwing it into something outrageous, you can make your own links.

How else would something as trite as the horror movie have managed to survive for years? It's a good formula. What creeps someone out may make another laugh.

With that said, I don't know. Go into seventies B horror movies, some of these are very creepy, or perhaps you'd prefer psychological horror, or again, horror thrillers-those are the ones that scare me the most, like Silence of the Lambs, because it's slightly plausible, within reason.
Or maybe things like The Exorcist, The Omen are The Amityville series are more up your alley.

Anyways to answer the question, Halloween II.

Well my top 2 would be

    1) The Audition - just terrifying & hard to watch

    2) The Haunting - the 1960 version It`s what you don`t see that scares you.

The Mirror is really too much horror. Please don't try to watch this movie alone in the dark.

It's mostly a matter of opinion, to me, the following horror movies are scary...

    "The Strangers"
"Alien" (not sure which part it was..)
    "Hostel"
    "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"

Thats about it, I don't like horror flicks very much. They're hardly ever scary, and when they are, I don't really like the feeling I'm getting from watching it, so it's not enjoyable. I have a really good imagination, and when I watch a movie I can really enthrall myself into it..so when I watch a really scary horror movie it makes me feel kind of disturbed. Anyway...the scariest movies are usually the ones that aren't horror movies but are horrific in their truth, like "The Deer Hunter", and "Boys Don't Cry", movies like that.

It all depends on what you believe.

Many say 'The Exorcist' is the scariest movie, but not believing in it, I was not affected by it.

My favorite scary movie is the original 'Halloween'. Take out the fact that he can't die (which isn't evident until the very end), and it's more or less realistic. He doesn't have abnormal super-powers, he just stalks and kills. It's fantastically creepy in the sense that it could happen.

It depends on your age. I watched Nightmare on Elm Street when I was about 6. Didn't sleep for a week.
