Modern medicine still had another 200 years before it started getting scientific. Until then, it was probably better to be a peasant than a king. The more money you had, the worse things they did to you. Blood letting, vile formulas and such were more likely to kill people than help them.

The early SNL crew with Steve Martin did a great send up on this period.
