Help answer this question below.
well I guess it depends on the prostitution. There's just nothing good about a person selling themselves to anyone for anything just to get drugs and both the prostitute and the john are endangered in myriad ways.
BUT
I mean honestly I don't see an issue with charging for something that is perfectly legal to give away for free. In places where prostitution is legal and controlled the income generated for the state/country is good, the conditions for the women are safe(r) and they are often less likely to be drug users, abused or controlled by a pimp and johns are less likely to get robbed etc.
IT seems to me that when people try to stop something that cannot be stopped (abortion, prostitution, gambling etc) it only serves to ensure that the conditions for it become more grotesque and horrid and it still exists. I think there's a happy medium we can find for these things where it is available to those who want it, it's safe(r) for those who supply it and it generates income for the state (which beenfits all).
I know most people have this ideal that prostitution is some woman in spandex with a herpe sore, standing on the corner offering bj's for 3 bucks or a crack rock while her pimp waits on the corner but for every one of those kinds of prostitutes there's the clean well dressed woman (or man) selling themselves for money or a house or a car or a job or something....hell when you really think about it we are all whores to something.
I think that it should be legal and regulated. Its a business transaction between two consenting adults in private, if you don't think its tasteful then don't participate. The danger of prostitution comes from the world of shadows in which it must operate, not from the prostitutes or their clients.
i don't feel anything about it.i see them when i drive up to Sarasota and i just chuckle.next corner i'll see Mennonites playing mini golf and i'll chuckle the same.
No. I do not see it as a necessary evil. But I would argue that women who marry for money are not far off the mark.
Anything that takes place between consenting adults is perfectly justified, and is nobody else's business!
i never went that route, but it should be legal.
Really I don't care. If one chooses to do partake in such a event, fine with me. I personally could never do it.
I think prostitution should be legal. Some people want sex and some people (prostitutes) want money......it all works out. The porn industry is basically the same as prostitution anyways - people are being paid to have sex.
Justified? I don't honestly don't know....but it has always been with us (and probably always will). The only unjustice I see is if someone gets hurt physically or emotionally....Prostitution is not for me, but I can't judge it for someone else.
Not only justified but necessary and should be legalized and regulated.
It should be legalized and regulated like the Bunny Ranch in Nevada.
Team hookers!
If the are adults it shouldnt be a crime.
I believe that prostitutes are basically victims & should be treated so. The whole 'business' should be decriminalised from the prostitutes perspective & help & treatment centre should be set up.
Clients should be publicly outed & prosecuted.
Pimps, or anyone making money off this misery should be treated with extreme prejudice by the courts.
I have more respect for a Prostitute than a promiscuous slapper (Tart)
At least the Prostitute puts a value on her favours.
Sex is one of human's basic needs. We should lose all of the hypocrisy & double standards and make prostitution legal. Then, regulate and tax it, like everything else.
I think that prostitution is one of the oldest professions and I think it should be legalized. By criminalizing it, or circumscribing it with laws, the government is only putting prostitutes in danger. Prostitutes are workers that contribute to the economy and pose no public threat: they should be protected.
It's not my thing, but there's nothing wrong with it. People have sold worse products......
Yes I think it is.
I worked for many years with disabled adults. Most of them were living or trying to live independently with assistance.
One of the gentleman I cared for had been crippled by cerebral palsy. He had the intelligence, emotions and desires we all have but he was unable to find a partner.
Once a week he had a prostitute come in. He was happier for the sexual relief and I was always glad for him. I know he like all of us wanted to meet someone and fall in love but as he said, it never had been possible for him because of the body he was trapped in.
I do think it ought to be legal with regular health exams and the like. I also feel that yes...sometimes it is an essential service.
Calls for a definition. Traditionally, a prostitute is one who engages in sex for money. Colloquially, a "prostitute" is one who will do almost anything for money. Using the colloquial definition, many people could be considered "prostitutes". I do not believe there are any moral issues with prostitution. If practiced as it is in states/countries where it is legal, it is medically safe (as safe as any sexual activity), emotionally as hazardous as any other similar activity and provides a service for which there is obviously a demand. I believe it is amply justified and should be allowed to prosper everywhere. I believe it is also harmless and we can all agree, it is an enjoyable activity.
Prostitution is just a job - if done "correctly" then I have no issues with it.....but most of the time it's a pretty nasty business.
Not for me
Yes
It has been said that prostitution is the oldest profession. Every culture in the world has prostitution in some form or another, even though almost every one of those cultures looks upon it as immoral or in many cases, illegal.
No matter how you look at it, it doesn't really make sense to not allow charging a fee for doing something that is otherwise not illegal (sex between consenting adults is not illegal, but charging for it is).
To be perfectly reasonable, a person's body is their own temple and they should be allowed to do with it as they please (as long as they are not harming themselves or others - that could be a problem). The reason prostitution exists, is because there are both service 'providers' and service 'consumers'. If prostitution is legalized and regulated (like other services are), then it makes it a much safer practice. When it is made illegal, it opens up incentives for unscrupulous people to take advantage of both the 'providers' and the 'consumers'. If the industry is regulated and sex workers are educated to practice safe methods (contraception, health checkups, etc), it is beneficial for all involved. The taxes alone from the industry could help fix problems in many countries.
Its a dangerous job with all the stds that is for sure, what one person decides to do i am not going to judge them for their choices, their are too many variables involved in why someone may choose to do this, i just wish them no harm.
through history, prostitution has never done anything to benefit a society. Much the latter. No.
Although I wouldn't do it, I don't think it's a terrible sin. If you want the cash - why not? Sex is sex. As long as you're safe & keep your business to yourself, there's not really much harm.
its only justified when the two are married.
no
Prostitution has been around forever. Even female chimps put out for food. Many who condemn it still participate in it. Why do women want to marry rich guys? They are still selling themselves. Yet they find a way to justify it.
when is it not justified?
whatever
And what difference is there between prostitution and marriage?
Marriage requires you to keep paying and paying and paying...
Prostitution should be legal as long as kids are not involved. As long as it is between consenting adults, it should not be anyone else's business. It should be justified as a legitimate occupation/profession that an individual can enter into without fear of intimidation from law authorities. If someone has no other alternative to employment and resources are scarce, it is justified instead of food stamps/welfare.
Guess it's done out of desperation, we all need money to survive.
Some evils cannot be eradicated.Prostitution is one of them.Moral evil can never be justified. But some evils can be toleated or allowed less greater evils arise. It is not a victimless crime because the prostitute has injured herself. The state should control prostitution and regulate it.The involvement of children in the sex slave trade is an example of a greater evil involved which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
it is just a service.. like everything else, should be legalised so at least the workers get fair pay and treated fairly
It is part of any civilization. I can't imagine a place where it is not there, I think that place will go crazy with crimes.
There is so much into this when it goes as a business. Several poor ladies will be forced to get into this without will. It is ugly out there as I understand.
Only if to save a life.
I don't believe that using or selling a prostitute is ever justified. It is taking advantage in the most extreme. It is completely unethical to me.
In terms of the prostitutes themselves, I have a lot of empathy for them. They need society's help. Being a prostitute doesn't make you a bad person, it makes you a person who has been failed.
Sex is legal, selling is legal, so selling sex should be legal.
Some people from dreamland will have you believe that all prostitutes are victims, and that all prostitutes are women, poppycock.
A recent investigation into trafficking in Britain, which took six months of effort by all 55 police forces in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland together with the UK Border Agency, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, the Foreign Office, the Northern Ireland Office, the Scottish government, the Crown Prosecution Service and various NGOs in what was trumpeted as "the largest ever police crackdown on human trafficking", failed to find a single person who was guilty of trafficking prostitutes in Britain, or guilty of forcing anyone to be a prostitute.
So although for dreamers and feminists alike, it's incredibly difficult to swallow, the fact is that most prostitutes CHOOSE to be prostitutes, but to dreamers and feminists, prostitution is wrong, and women don't do wrong, so therefore there must be a man somewhere down the line who forced them to do it, it's almost laughable hearing/reading their attempts at trying to deflect any negativity from women onto men.
Another thing I wanted to mention, was there was a TV show on not too long ago over here, it was two women from the WI (Women's Institute) who were against prostitution, they went to brothels all around the world, some legal, some not so legal, and they actually changed their minds by the end and said it should be legal so as the women and clientèle were safer, and contributing to society by paying taxes, remember this is two women from the WI for God's sake.
I say make it legal, which in turn makes it safer, and then those who want to be prostitutes can be, and pay taxes while they're at it, and those who want use prostitutes can, and pay taxes while they're at it.

Very good answer. One other thing that is often not discussed is that their are some prostitutes that enjoy their job. It's well paid, for only a few hours work. Theirs a great deal of job satisfaction for some. This to is more likely to occur where it's legalized. :)

Damn - I can only give +5 for an answer that clearly deserves more. Well thought out, well spoken, good points, and IMHO right on the mark.
