Help answer this question below.
Even as late as the 19th Century it was still considered very daring for a women to go on the stage. It was considered only women of easy virtue would parade themselves in public in such a manner. In the 16/17th Century it would not have been allowed.
I have an even BETTER question: why were/are kids FORCED to study Shakespeare in ENGLISH class--with his "broken" english? If I knew where he was buried, I'd PISS on his grave!!!
Exposing themselves on the public stage was regarded as far too bold for women. Any woman who acted was regarded as a prostitute, and a particularly brazen one at that.
Im Alec gave a good answer. It was not socially acceptable in "polite/correct society" to appear in public as a play actress.
Ooh women were not allowed out..they were tied to the kitchen sink and used as breeding machines..hahahaha!!!
I'm questioning why you put the quote marks on "female". Wasn't Kate a female role? Lady MacBeth?
Anyway, I'm sure it was a union rule.
I think I heard that was true, seems silly now huh?
