  • Do they use weapons in karate? I always understood karate to mean 'open hand'.
  • A better way is to learn how to use virtually anything at hand as a weapon. Most things can be used as weapons if you know how. I have seen Japanese fans, hollow cardboard tubes, broom handles, and many other things used very effectively as weapons.
  • Karate originated in Okinawa as "Te". When it was adopted in Japan, it was known as "Chinese Hand". As the admiration of all things Chinese wanned it came to be known as "Open Hand" because of the similarity between the Kanji characters for "Chinese" and "Open" and to reflect the distain for weapons use in the Japanese form of the art. Traditional Okinawan Kara-te employs many weapons that have been adapted from traditional farming tools. As the military had restricted the use of actual weapons to itself, the general population turned to use "weapons" they were most familiar with.
