Not free. We are all bound by certain criteria, such as needing to eat, shelter, or access to clean air. Considering it's practically impossible for anyone to live without having to get a job, rely on gov't assistance or being a thief, I would say we're only as free as the amount of money we have access to. The more money you have, the more freedom you have. How many rich people get away with crimes the rest of us wouldn't? How many poor people can gain access to the necessities of life without having to sacrifice either another necessity, such as health care, or face imprisonment?
    .
The free world is some ideal that is impossible to reach currently. Perhaps at some point in the future when all men are treated as equally as they are born, we can say it is truly a free world. I have a feeling that won't happen as long as there is a monetary system in place and people aren't willing to educate themselves. +3

You might be "freer" in Venezuela or Lebanon. In Britain the average citizen is caught on CCTV 300 times per day.

    A lot of restrictions apply.

What would be considered 'free' in the U.S. would be jail time in Saudi.

It's more free than some people give it credit for (compared to certain dictatorships and theocracies)... but not free enough for the people who believe they should be able to do ANYTHING they want without consecquences.

You are on the inside looking out. It's impossible for you to see the entire picture and thus make valid comparisons. Go live in a country that is less free than yours for a few years. Then come back and ask this question.

It's becoming less and less free as people choose security over freedom. Many of these laws only create an illusion of security while eroding personal freedom. +5 Jadey

We in the United States have laws for all occasions and we put more people in prisons than Joseph Stalin ever did in Russia.

Free to do what? You have plenty of freedom within reason. Free to buy what you can afford, sleep with who agrees to sleep with you, and free to live anywhere within your means. Otherwise what do you need?

Depends really, what some people call free is an open field, with everything they need. Some say it's the right of speech and actions. i believe it's both. But we are freedom! We get away with too much! :D

have you registered this question with the ministry of truth? [joke making reference to freedom and 1984]

it varies. probably one-third of the nations are considered free. within them, most of us are pawns to politicians' sound bites, slanted media reporting ... we have some freedoms, for example in the u.s. we do have a bill of rights and the amendments to the constitution. the founding fathers debated whether a bill of responsibilities also should have been incorporated. imagine a nation in which people felt duty to country to examine the issues within their jurisdiction and examine the candidates' backgrounds and vote for what's in their best interest.

so much of the free world really isn't free, is it?

then again, how many of us human beings are truly free from the influences of our past, child-rearing, beliefs ...

Only as free as the government will allow you. The days of the frontiersman and explorers are gone. Now those guys and women were free.
