You might be "freer" in Venezuela or Lebanon. In Britain the average citizen is caught on CCTV 300 times per day.

Britain is starting to scare me. When I visited there, it seemed like a nation of alcoholics to me.

There is a massive drinking culture here, and plenty "weekend alcoholics" and worse.

Not free. We are all bound by certain criteria, such as needing to eat, shelter, or access to clean air. Considering it's practically impossible for anyone to live without having to get a job, rely on gov't assistance or being a thief, I would say we're only as free as the amount of money we have access to. The more money you have, the more freedom you have. How many rich people get away with crimes the rest of us wouldn't? How many poor people can gain access to the necessities of life without having to sacrifice either another necessity, such as health care, or face imprisonment?
.
The free world is some ideal that is impossible to reach currently. Perhaps at some point in the future when all men are treated as equally as they are born, we can say it is truly a free world. I have a feeling that won't happen as long as there is a monetary system in place and people aren't willing to educate themselves. +3

Avatar Stevie Nov, 03 2009 at 12:19 PM
Nah. I don't think politicians are effective at improving society. But I'm not sure who is yet. Once I do, then I'm getting in that field. Thanks for the vote anyway though!

It's more free than some people give it credit for (compared to certain dictatorships and theocracies)... but not free enough for the people who believe they should be able to do ANYTHING they want without consecquences.

You are on the inside looking out. It's impossible for you to see the entire picture and thus make valid comparisons. Go live in a country that is less free than yours for a few years. Then come back and ask this question.

Indeed! Freedom is an elusive concept to pin down because it's so relative. "Free" when compared to what? As has been said in the past, "It's a wonderful gift to see ourselvs as others see us." And this applies at a national level too. It's often difficult to see just how free you are when you're on the inside looking out at other countries. I have had a rather unique perspective over the years because I lived in so many different places around the globe. It was very sobering to see just how little freedom many other cultures offer their people, and just how fragile and easily lost are the freedoms we take for granted here in America.
Avatar Jadey - Vive la difference Nov, 05 2009 at 02:49 AM
Thanks CaptainHarley, of course. It's so hard to step out from our own positions, we get an added extra insight if we can be completely removed for a period of time. One can look at it on the philosophical level too, as some of the people answering have chosen to do.

I'm afraid I'm not very "philosophical." Old soldiers are like that ... whatever is IS! : D

It's becoming less and less free as people choose security over freedom. Many of these laws only create an illusion of security while eroding personal freedom. +5 Jadey
