How is it that we figured out how to put a man on the moon before we realized it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

    Wheels on luggage probably became common in response to the building of very long concourses in airports. Up until the 1960s air travel was relatively uncommon so airport buildings were smaller. Heathrow airport at Londoin was completed around 1964 and Narita at Tokyo much later.

    In other places porters were available, or paving might not have existed. You can't drag wheeled luggage across unpaved ground.
