The illusion that they are going to live forever, that they are indestructable.
I agree with gtravels. I would also add that once you've grown up, what you fear has also changed. Instead of being afraid of the boggie man or girls you are afraid of not being able to pay the rent, about putting food on the table for your family or saving enough money for your kid to go to college.
The building of confidence with positive experience. A good support system can also work wonders;)
