Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons was the first to wear a mask in a game, but it wasn't what we now know as a goaltenders mask, just a modified leather one...Space Monkey is correct..that Jacques Plante wore the first real goaltender mask in a NHL game..

the first goal tender ever to don a mask was a woman who used a fencing mask, mostly, she said, to protect her teeth. Elizabeth Graham of Queen's University did so in 1927
