Yes. It's almost like learning a second language. Learning another language doesn't degrade your first language.

There are a lot of "studies" out there. Before accepting them, we have to evaluate the studey in terms of the sample, duration and logistics. I think that IM and emailing degrades language skills, specially in the written communication area and mostly for young people that still are in the learning process. And, if I do a study with that premise, I'll find a sample and method to prove it, too.
