It really depends on the kind of behavior, but if something sounds/looks too 'unnatural'... A psychiatrist/psychologist is always recommended.

I don't think there is really any signs that are completely accurate when it comes to the mental state. Depression and bi polar disorder have many of the symptoms as insanity, as does schizophrenia paranoia etc. If the person has absolutely no sense of right or wrong, no emotional attatchment's or sense of reality, I would say they are insane, otherwise, just a mental disturbance of some sort.

Belief in delusions, evidence of hallucinations, belief in "magic", and hiding behind the bushes. ;)
