Help answer this question below.
PC has lost its collective mind so, yes, it probably would.
I am currently listening to Gypsy Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4b1LJU-6AE) which, if people thought about it, highly stereotypes my people and PC would say that I "should" be offended. Fluck that. I love the song. I shall listen to it a few more times in honor of this question.
I shall follow it with "Love Potion #9" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rXhXLsNJL8 , non PC towards my people), Dark Lady (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnYAkvCpom0 , again my people), "Turning Japanese" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEmJ-VWPDM4) , "Mexican Radio" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkHFjm_9iew), "Son of a Preacher Man" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp4339EbVn8 ), "White punks on Dope" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaEgJ8vXuXg), "Mercedes Benz" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-GFqhCq2HA), then a song by the late, great Lady Day (Billy Holiday) "Ain't Nobody's Business" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq5LiRoYCBo , photos not her, unfortunately)...
... in a personal tribute to non PC songs.
It seems that PC is doing its best to find something... anything... to be offended over.
Its intentions are not bad but, to me, the defining moment of it going insane was when people stopped putting out Nativity scenes for fear of offending someone.
I think it should be institutionalized and heavily sedated since an American apartment complex decided that all flags, including the American one, had to be banned because all of them might offend someone.
Life is not long enough to be THAT stressed over, well, everything. If the American flag is going to be offensive in AMERICA, PCdom needs one of these desperately:

Theres nothing racist about Walk Like an Egyptian as it refers to a kind of ancient Egyptian dance.Would 'Walk Like A Mexican' be considered racist too? The answer to that one is no.
Yep. Over here in Australia they're trying to ban Creole Creams, Eskimo Marshmallows, Coon cheese and various other things.
It shouldn't be considered racist because it isn't, but nowadays any mention of race etc. sets alarm bells off, so it probably would run into controversy.
You ask the question like the song was so long ago; it was just back in the 80s.
It still gets replayed every now and then on retro-music stations, and I've never heard any complaints about it.
Besides, the Egyptians mentioned in the song are the ancients native inhabitants, not the modern Arab inhabitants of Egypt.
I think it's a case of PC gone insane, but someone will likely find it insulting. Honestly, if we'd all just lighten up a bit these kinds of things wouldn't be a problem.
It's a poor song. Considering it as racist and banning it will be a favor for them cause this way more people will try to find it and listen to it!
I'm sure someone will find offense to it.
I am willing to bet all I have that some idiot would consider it racist!
Not sure how. It isn't the best song, no, and the dance steps are far less complicated than the hokey pokey, but how that could in the least be considered racist is far beyond. If that's the case, we should ban "Boat On the River" by STYX because it may offend those who get seasick easily.
It would be allowed now. No part of it is racist. If someone tells you it is, tell them its cultural. They also can't outlaw a song. It infringes freedom of speech and expression. People who call it racist need to get a life.
How is it like having to deal with racism? I have never dealt with it but grew up in a racist family,
I want to change my thoughts

You're reading The song "Walk like an Egyptian", would that be allowed now or considered racist?

I agree completely!
However, I do need to say, I read the story about the apartment complex banning the "stars and stripes" and they did NOT do so in case they offended someone but because flags were obtrusive upon other peoples properties. I could understand the ban if it only banned large flags, but find it ridiculous that they banned all flags, after all some flags are tiny and simply can not be considered obtrusive in any way.
Also, thanx for the other songs! They all bring back memories, especially the preacher man :D
by slothmister on October 29th, 2009
That ban was, actually, illegal. I found the Federal law signed in by Bush that made it illegal. According to the article I found, the owner of the apartment complex stated that it was a diverse population and she did not want to offend anyone.
.
You also might be talking about another case. This has happened more than once.
.
I asked a question based on this one that you might enjoy. It shall bring back some memories too:

Excellent answer. Wish I could give you more points. It has gotten way out of hand.
Great songs, by the way.

Ye, I read that law too. And I agree with it! No one should be banned from flying a country's flag as long as it does not infringe on other peoples property. That includes people in the US flying the Iranian flag (due to the US supposedly being a free country).
Love your question :)
by slothmister on October 29th, 2009
Dubya did not do much good but signing that bill into law was one of the good things.
.
I personally have no problem with any flags other than the Nazi swastika. That says to me "these people are going to f*ck with you."
.
Thankyou for the compliment. :) I am collecting some good answers.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
I added "Mercedes Benz" by Joplin and "White Punks on Dope" by the Tubes to the list. How could I forget those?
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Actually, the swastika is a very old symbol from varied cultures. It's too bad the Nazis gave it such infamy.
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
It is. I know that it is a symbol of peace from many nations. That is why I specified "Nazi swastika."
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Wrong!
The swastika is a mark of evil! The symbol of peace you guys are referring too is a mirror image of the swastika with a dot placed in each gap.

Arisztid: Why Love Potion #9?
by Dodgy Dog in a Sable COAT on October 29th, 2009
Actually, the American Indians and also Hebrews used that symbol. Although, you may be right about the direction of the wheel turning. I don't remember for sure.
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
Aris, what about "Walking Spanish."
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
I cannot remember the direction of the swastika either. It is like the Confederate flag. I do not see the flag, itself, as racist. It has been turned into a symbol of racism.
.
If I had confederate ancestry I would be very angry that I could not fly the flag of my ancestors without taking crap.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Just about anything from Tom Waits is anti PC!
.
I cannot remember if you were in the thread where I mentioned Tom Lehrer but that guy could not be any less PC. Some might think his music is offensive, however, to me it is pointed and topical. Hilarious to boot.
.
I was thinking about it and people object to songs that, in their day, were not offensive but have become offensive by modern standards. There are some songs that people ask mes "if they substituted 'Gypsy' for [whatever], THEN what would you think?"
.
I tell them that these were past days, if I do not like it I do not need to listen to it, and they are, actually, historical records of changing times and attitudes.
.
Another song I like is "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" which could not be more insulting to my people. In it Cher is using the word "Gypsy," itself, as an insult. Cher, however, is not, herself, being insulting. She is saying that is what the people called them. The term itself was insulting and it is used in that context to this day. The word, as she used it in that song and as it is still used by some, is as bad as n*gger.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Much of my life I am surrounded by hispanics and I hear the words blanco and gringo a lot. Also, with the Japanese it's gaijin. But, it depends on how they are used at the moment. If someone is using it to be insulting, well, that's their problem. But, actually, a lot of the time it's just a colloquial thing and not really meant as an insult at all.
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
I just realized...I should be offended...3 Dog Night insulted me with that song, "Joy to the World." Oh, well. Too late now. I might as well enjoy the music. 8:D
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
Exactly! It is good music.
.
Things like gangsta rap and white supremacist groups like Prussian Blue and Screwdriver are TRYING to offend.
.
Music like we are discussing never had that intent.
.
Some young Rroma really get bent over being called "Gypsy," most older Rroma could not care less. I am one of the "could not care less" bunch. As long as your intent is not to offend me, I do not give a hoot. And, if someone intends to offend me, they become irrelevant, hence, I do not give a hoot. :)

Oh Dodgy, Love Potion #9 because of this:
,
I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine
.
I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I'd been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"
.
That is one of the stereotypes of us.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Talk about insulting...what do you think about AB saying none of us is ranked better than 1000 so we don't have anyone on the board.8:P

by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
I see. It certainly seems insulting but, surely, we don't take song lyrics that seriously, do we?
by Dodgy Dog in a Sable COAT on October 29th, 2009
I don't really understand how that was supposed to be an insult. How about the song AND the movie "Golden Earrings?"
I loved both of them, too. Are they not PC and I can't like them?
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
I am just talking about songs that would be considered racist to just un-PC. It is like words. I have watched the PC pendulum swing from place to place, one thing becoming forbidden, then another, then back, then another.
.
Personally, I like the song. I think that if someone objects to any of these songs, from the one Slothmister mentioned to mine to.... whoevers, they should realize that times change, the PC pendulum swings, and not get their knickers in a knot.
.
It is the intent of a song that makes it offensive and none of the ones mentioned here had that intent.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
Do you mean "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring? I love that song.
by Arisztid on October 29th, 2009
No, no. There was a movie called "Golden Earrings" with Ray Miland and Marlene Dietrich in the '40's. He was a downed flier and she was a gypsy woman hiding him. The theme song was "Golden Earrings" and was a very beautiful song. If you haven't heard it, you should. And, the movie was excellent also. Man, that was so long ago and I can still remember a lot of it. I guess I'm not losing it yet. At least, not totally.
by Bull wears a COAT of many colours on October 29th, 2009
Oh that is gorgeous! I found it on youtube:

I am saving that to my favorites.
.
I would love to see that movie. Both Ray Miland and Marlene Dietrich were fantastic.
