It's going to be so much easier if you ask. The only way you're going to get him to ask is if you drop some obvious hints that you like him and you want him to ask you out. You can try the classic conversation that goes something like:
"so, do you plan on going to the dance Friday? I'm still waiting for the right person to ask me..." then go from there.
