You're reading Why dose my timing keep moving everytime i try to turn my car over? the timing mark always goes around and back to where it was.My car wont start eith with black smoke out of the exhaust pipe.could it be bacause the dist wasnt placed in the same spot?

ok
pull number 1 plug and hand crank the engine
you need the number 1 pistion to be at top dead center on the COMPRESSION stroke NOT the exhaust stroke
cover the hole with your finger to feel for compression
use a small screw drive to determine TDC
if the pistion stop moving UP while had cranking you're close enough
the distributor rotor should be pointing at the number one plug wire on the cap
if it's not the distrubutor timing is off
just pull the distrubutor up anr reset the rotor to #1
then time with a light
