No more than Christians feel hypocritical for participating in pagan rituals and customs during various holidays.

No. I don't associate either the city or the team with religion, even if those who named the city did so for religious reasons. It's just a name. Just FYI, I'm not hypocritical when I root for the Calcutta Cricket Team, either.

I'm sorry but that is a pretty stupid question.

Have you asked those of Anglo descent if THEY feel hypocritical rooting for those teams?

Yes. That is why I root for the New Jersey Devils, Red Devil Sauce, Hell's Angels, Miroslav Satan and the Arizona Sun Devils.

There is no reason to feel hypocritical because a person is not actually rooting for mythical beings. The support is going to the real humans that name themselves after the mythical beings.

Think of the hypocrisy by those thousands of UK-Muslims, who live in towns and cities ending with -HAM!
(Mayor of BirmingHAM is an Asian Muslim)...

And unlike atheists, they believe in such stuff!
Oh my! Aren't they all doomed!
    (In deep p.g-shxt, that is...)

Not at all, they're just names. (Although there aren't many cities in the UK with religious-based names, unless you count ones with the word church or minster in the name). I would feel far more hypocritical about rooting for a sports team in a city where I don't live.

A question for Amorphous Blob. Do you feel hypocritical rooting for sports teams named "Grizzlies", "Red Wolves", "Hawks", "Eagles", "Mustangs", "Pumas", "Bobcats" or other names implying a belief in Animism.

PS: Personally I strongly dislike professional sports. I do not watch it and dont root for any team. And I do feel a bit hypocritical, because I do like watching the cheerleaders ;-))

These are just names of places
    given from historical tradition
that need not be reversed or 'un-done'!
