How do you feel when someone describes a corner store run by Middle Easterners as "A Habib Store"?

It seems to have a different connotation in the US though.

I couldn't comment on that, being Australian, only on what it means. One of the band members at our former church was always called "habibi" and he called me "habibti". It was like "bello" and "bella" to the italians.

my county has nearly one million people in it, Pinellas county florida. It seems that nearly every corner store and gas station is owned and or run by someone of Near Eastern descent. I heard someone use it in a sentence last year describing them and I didn't know how I should feel about it.

in the same way as my brother in law gets called a Polynesian, which is where his ancestry can be found location wise, but he is a Cook Islander born in New Zealand. Names are just things we give to make it easy to describe someone whose precise origin we may not know.

If we can't work up the courage to ask them where they're from, then should we really be separating them into categories like that in the first place?

I see your point. As I said, for me it is no problem, and I would probably have found out precisely where they were from because I ask people. but that is me.
