How can we educate people that driving slower than the speed limit when there is no traffic (or other adverse condition) is just as dangerous as or more dangerous than driving faster than the speed limit?

• Well, 50 miles over is more dangerous than 10 miles under. But 10 miles under is way more dangerous than 10 miles over. It all depends on the context.

• Not at all. 10 miles over increases your reaction distance by about 30%.
  The ONLY time driving too slow is more dangerous than driving too fast is when others want to drive to fast and do not have the patience to wait for a spot to overtake.

• 3 miles under is usually not a big deal, but you are actually supposed to drive right at the limit, unless there is traffic or some other adverse condition.

• Then why are truck drivers supposed to drive ten mph under the limit? Vehicles towing trailers might be twenty mph under the limit. Slow Traffic Keep Right, have you seen that sign?

  the slow driver is only a danger because the person coming up on them isnt paying attention. Not too recently ago, someone stopped on the freeway to watch the dophins jumping in the surf. Near La Conchita California. Many people died that day, as the next group of cars slammed into that one car. Horse and buggies on the highway with a triangle in the back get run over all the time.

  agreeable, slow traffic on the interstate can be a killing situation. One traffic pile up, can be terrible for oncoming traffic because they just drive right on into it. People just drive too fast to make quick decisions. Everyone is at fault.

• I agree with everything you say here. If you are in a large truck for example, the benefits of going slower outweigh the risks of someone slamming into you from behind. But if you are just in a normal everyday car, keep up with traffic.

• I see two problems with drivers...cell phone people drive way too slow. and old people drive way too slow. we should be able to shoot on sight people who drive while talking on their cell phones. there arent enough cops to handle the problem. old people should not get their license renewed after seventy.

• Sorry, I am an ex cop. If I saw someone slam on their brakes or swerve because they didn't notice someone was slowed down in front of them I would give that person a ticket, The drivers test in every state I have seen has a question about how much safe distance you have to keep between vehicles. I saw many accidents from going to fast, Anyone who rear ends another person ALWAYS gets the citation for failure to maintain a safe driving distance and careless driving, Sorry bud, It's the law.

• So, when someone serves into me and kills me, do you really think it is going to comfort my mother, wife, and kids if you tell them that you gave the guy a ticket? You can pass any law you want and write tickets until your pen runs out if ink, but it won't change the fact that it is dangerous to drive significantly slower or faster than traffic.

• Maybe it's just you, Millions of people drive every day and have no problem judging speed and distance, Maybe you shouldn't be driving until you get an eye exam. there are plenty of reasons to drive under the speed limit, The limit is how fast you can go. Not how slow. Mail carriers, street sweepers, sometimes just old folks who feel safer driving 25 in a 35 , bicycles, farm implements, maybe someone has just developed car problems and is trying to limp into the service station. They all have a legal right to the road even if they don't move as fast as you like. you have to constantly be paying attention. There is no legal excuse for hitting someone going too slow.
