  • I don't know why this question got into "computers". I put it under "cats". I am hoping a moderator will kindly put this question where it belongs. Thank you! :)
  • I think dog owners take better care of their pets as a general rule. We have a cat. We've always had cats. My wife is able to find coupons for cat food. She also watches certain store circulars for deals on cat food. Rite Aid sometimes has good buys on it.
  • I thought dogs would be tops, but according to the American Veterinary Medicine Association's website, "There are more than 72 million pet dogs in the U.S. and nearly 82 million pet cats." http://www.avma.org/reference/marketstats/sourcebook.asp Dogs and cats both need lots of protein in their diet, but unlike cats, dogs can survive on a carefully crafted diet of vegetable protein. Cats are true carnivores. THey cannot stay healthy without meat.
  • Actually, cats passed dogs in numbers a few years ago here in the U.S. My understanding, though, is that there are still more households with dogs than households with cats. Cat owners are more likely to have multiple cats than dog owners are. (I've go two.) . As to the diet, cats are pure carnivores while dogs are a bit closer to humans in being omnivorous.
  • Dogs are more general eaters, so there are more manufacturers to put coupons out. Cats are actually more popular now. Nutritonwise, cats are completely different. For example, cats need a nutrient called Taurine. It comes from raw meat. It is an additive in ALL cat food in the USA, for certain. Without it, they can have heart problems, blindness, and other major health issues. Dogs, on the other hand, do not need it at all.
  • i do see a lot of stray cats around but hardly any dogs at the animal shelter and stuff.
  • I've heard for a long time that there are more cats as pets than there are dogs. And, as several have already pointed out, cats are more carnivorous than dogs.
  • For the last few years, there are more cats as pets than dogs. But it's usually a fact that dogs eat more food than cats so I think that is why there are more coupons and discounts for their food. What we've found is a good deal is to go to a pet store and buy the better quality foods and most independent stores will give you a free case or bag of food after buying X number of items. Our cat food is about $27 a bag and every 5-6 months we get a free bag. We do the same thing with cases of wet food. We do feed a no-gluten food, too and find that they eat much less of the food since there is much more nutrition in it. I'd like them to be on a all natural diet of raw meaty bones, but I've got some really picky eaters and one just won't make the switch. Cats and dogs both do much better when they are on a natural diet. Both were designed to eat a meaty diet since they are both carnivores. In fact, they have few enzymes (cats have none!), to digest grains or veggies. It's purely moneymaker for the commercial food manufacturers to put in grain and plant products. But when you feed a natural diet, they eat very little, feel great, have very small stools and they don't smell bad at all. They don't have allergies, have good teeth, better neck muscles, great skin and coat, even better temperaments. SO we find that we come out ahead in cost when we feed a better diet even if the food seems more expensive. Oh, and cats do have a different diet than dogs, as there are a few amino acids that they need that dogs don't, so it has to be added to their food if they are on a commercial diet. If they eat natural food, like meat, then it's in there. It's not in fish however, all fish is a bad diet for cats since it has no taurine in it.
  • Cat food has a higher protein content than dog food as cats need more protein. Dog food and cat food are not interchangeable.Cats are far more predatory by nature and more carnivorous than dogs who scavenge more readily.+5
  • Cats are more carnivorous than dogs. The average cat is smaller and eat less food than the average dog, so the returns are greater when you get a dog owner hooked on your product.
  • There are far many more cats kept as pets globally than dogs, this pattern is mirrored in the US too (just watched a documentary).
