What is worse on your brakes? To hit your brakes right before the stop sign or gradually slow down using your brake/ride your brake?

• That's what I figured but wasn't sure so I didnt contradict my friend when he told me I kill my brakes by slowing as I near the stop sign.

• FYI
  rotors
  and ABS only is computer controlled, when a traction loss is present. Hitting the brakes hard doesn't mean the ABS will engage, braking hard damages the brake pads/shoes more than rotors
  In poor traction conditions ABS will take loger to stop than conventional brakes, you will still be able to steer the vehicle.
