Question

Help answer this question below.

It is my understanding that someone can easily find out where I work from my credit report, but I want to keep my employer private. Is there any way I can keep this information from leaking out?

  • And your tax forms. Unfortunately, from the research I have done, the answer is no. I am in the same boat and am uncomfortable with listing who my employer is. I get around this by not listing exactly who my employer is. Instead I say DoD (Dept. of Defense). My employer recognizes this and encourages us to use that term if we feel more comfortable doing so. It is not false information since DoD is very broad and many government agencies fall within that classification. Perhaps your employer has a similar suggestion? Other than that, I don't think anything is leakproof these days which is unfortunate.

You might try corresponding with each credit reporting agency, after obtaining a current copy of each report, and ask that the information regarding your employer be removed or revised. If your reason is compelling, they might be willing to do so. It never hurts to ask. Credit reporting contact info.:

Keep in mind that each time you apply for a line of credit, the application will typically ask for the name, address, and phone number of your employer. So, the information is not really "leaked" to credit reporting agencies and the section that states who your current (or at least last known) employer is will likelt be updated at the time of application or shortly thereafter. You might try listing the name if the department or section you work in rather than the company name. On applications, they are really just looking for a way of verifying that you are employed ( a valid phone number and address should suffice). If you are applying for a mortgage, however, and the application info. does not match info. on your W-2s it could be a problem-ask your loan processor for assistance and see if they can work with you in that case.

    NOTE:
The question specified information on a credit report, NOT W-2s and I answered accordingly. I briefly addressed the tax form in relation to a credit report based on the experience of a co-worker who was deep in debt. He owed a "substantial" amount to a creditor and they wished to garnish his wages. Creditors can be determined when a large sum of money is involved. . .and slick. They contacted the company that held his mortgage in an effort to locate a current address where he could be served. The mortgage company and creditor were somehow related and the mortage co. sent over copies of his files which contained copies of his W-2s. So, in that scenario, yes the employer listed on the W-2 was leaked to another party and subsequently shared with many others looking to collect. When that happened and the creditor filed a judgment against him, the credit report was updated with the information received. And the section that states who the last known employer was had been updated to reflect who his current employer was per the W-2. Very roundabout way of the W-2 info possibly being the source that information. When he went to court to settle, his attorney was given access to his records which is what turned up that the W-2 had been shared. As you can see, this is its own question with its own answer. I am sure there are many other ways, but this is the one I personally know of.
