  • The trench warfare on the Western Front in WW1 occurred as a result of stalemate following the failure of German forces to execute the Schlieffen Plan of a rapid swing through Belgium to the English Channel and envelopment of Paris. When the German forces were blocked from their objective, they selected defensible terrain and started digging in. The result of this shifts from a war of maneuver to a war of attrition. At this point, the British naval blockade of the Central powers became key, as they were denied food and raw materials for industry. The Western Front did not break open again into a war of maneuver until the summer of 1918 following Ludendorf's failed spring offensive. +5
